Around seven years ago, while strolling past pots of herbs in a supermarket, Bas Dirven, the R&D manager at Meteor Systems, was far from pleased with the quality he observed. He couldn’t fathom why such subpar products were being sold. This dissatisfaction, coupled with the growing concerns about substrate shortages, spurred Bas to embark on a mission to find a solution that didn’t rely on traditional potting soil.
Meteor Systems successfully developed and patented a groundbreaking solution that relies solely on water and nutrients, eliminating the need for potting soil. This innovation not only addresses quality issues but also aligns with the imperative to mitigate substrate shortages.
The ingenious system created by Meteor Systems enables the cultivation of herbs, lettuce, flowers, and plants from seed to windowsill. The versatile system is designed to facilitate seamless growth, allowing plants to transition from the cultivation system to packaging and ultimately reach supermarket shelves.
This transformative system commenced with the invention of a novel type of cultivation rack, followed by the development of floats. These floats play a pivotal role in a complete system for pond cultivation. However, the team at Meteor Systems recognized the need for a solution suitable for tabletop and roller container systems.
The key innovation lies in the incorporation of a “lid” within the system. Plants are cultivated directly on this lid, simplifying the transition from the cultivation system to packaging. For automated cultivation systems, a transplanter supplier can effortlessly attach the plant holder under the rim and secure it onto the lid.
Meteor Systems has also turned its attention to addressing substrate challenges. In response to shortages and sustainability concerns, the company has introduced a “mat” on which plants are grown. This innovative “seed pad” approach streamlines the cultivation process. The mat comes pre-loaded with seeds, ready to be hydrated, placed in trays, integrated into the growing system, and set into motion.
Moreover, this unique plant holder system offers numerous benefits to supermarkets. Unlike traditional potted plants with potting soil, this system virtually eliminates the risk of water leakage into customers’ shopping bags when the lid is securely sealed. Furthermore, it alleviates the need for supermarkets to water the plants on their shelves.
In consumers’ homes, the system extends the lifespan of plants considerably. The plant’s root system retains a substantial amount of water, enabling the plant to thrive for up to three months. This longevity empowers consumers to enjoy fresh leaves continually.
Meteor Systems’ commitment to innovation and sustainability is transforming the horticultural landscape, offering practical solutions that benefit growers, retailers, and consumers alike.
