Hoogeveen Plants, a prominent plant grower based in Hazerswoude-Dorp, is making significant strides towards a greener and more sustainable future by cultivating over a million hellebores in peat-free potting soil. The nursery’s commitment to peat-free growing practices is not only aimed at the English market but is considered a vital initiative for the entire European market. By adopting peat-free potting soil, Hoogeveen Plants is actively contributing to reducing CO2 emissions and protecting sensitive natural areas from excavation.
Colin Kok, the nursery’s account manager, emphasized the importance of their sustainable approach. In addition to going peat-free, the company is dedicated to sourcing raw materials that are 100% renewable. This combination of renewable materials and sustainable cultivation practices, including the use of organic crop care and bio-simulants, ensures that their hellebores have the lowest possible environmental impact.
The selection of renewable substrates was made with careful consideration of both plant quality and longevity. Thanks to the use of bio-simulants during the warm season and favorable summer temperatures, this year’s hellebores have exhibited exceptional quality and are even more substantial than in previous years.
Hoogeveen Plants specializes in cultivating a diverse range of garden plants across 14 different locations, collectively spanning over 50 hectares of production. The nursery has recently taken steps to streamline its delivery process, especially important as the hellebore season approaches. With many grades and variations in growth and flowering stages, ensuring accurate handling and management is crucial to delivering top-quality plants.
While the hellebore season is brief but intense, Hoogeveen Plants has made significant progress by shipping these plants from only two locations, as opposed to five in previous years, and predominantly using peat-free substrates. Their dedication to sustainability, coupled with meticulous care practices and favorable growing conditions, has positioned them for a successful upcoming delivery period.
Hoogeveen Plants’ commitment to sustainability not only benefits their business but also contributes to a greener and more environmentally conscious horticultural industry in Europe.
