In a collaborative effort between Klondike Gardens and De Boer Calla & Hydrangea in the Netherlands, a transformation has taken place in their shared greenhouse. The changeover from growing Germinis to cultivating large Calla cut flowers has been a successful venture. The cultivation systems were meticulously prepared for this transition over the summer.
Rob de Boer, an integral part of this collaboration, recalled, “We began discussing this exactly a year ago. I was in search of a larger, more modern cultivation facility for my Callas and had the desire to collaborate with fellow entrepreneurs. I firmly believe that engaging in dialogue and partnering with others offers numerous advantages. My familiarity with Tom van Leeuwen from our school days facilitated the conversation. And here we are today – with a greenhouse brimming with large-flowered Callas, with the first harvest already underway.”
Tom van Leeuwen added his enthusiasm, stating, “This collaboration has us genuinely excited. With our mutual interest in De Boer Calla’s, this nursery has embarked on a new trajectory. This transformation is made possible by the extensive knowledge, expertise, and established customer base of De Boer. We are committed to ensuring that Callas are readily available during significant holidays, such as Thanksgiving and All Saints Day.”
Tom emphasized that this commitment was already a hallmark of De Boer’s nursery. The primary Calla variety cultivated is the striking white Captain Ventura, while other varieties rotate with the changing seasons. Presently, the greenhouse is graced with the presence of Captain Ventura, Captain Odeon, Carrera, and White Horse. Further varieties will be added to the mix from mid-October through Christmas.
At its secondary location, Klondike Gardens will continue to produce a diverse array of Geminis. Meanwhile, De Boer Calla’s remains dedicated to the growth of Callas and the vibrant bicolored Sunsation cut hydrangea Sunsation at its nursery. This collaborative endeavor exemplifies the agricultural innovation and versatility that Dutch greenhouse operations bring to the global flower market.
