Colombia’s floral landscape not only boasts remarkable diversity but also serves as a catalyst for positive social and environmental change. With approximately 10,000 hectares dedicated to flower cultivation, this vibrant sector not only yields a profusion of blooms but also provides a substantial source of employment. In fact, the Colombian flower industry sustains 200,000 formal jobs, with 110,000 being direct positions, of which more than half are occupied by women. These flowers are nurtured through stringent practices that prioritize nature and the environment, with continual investments made to enhance and expand sustainability efforts.
During the week of the Proflora trade show, which runs from October 4-6 in Bogota, we had the opportunity to explore the endeavors of two exemplary companies, Riofrio Bouquets and Rosamina. These businesses exemplify the remarkable diversity of Colombian flowers and underscore the sector’s profound commitment to social and environmental progress.
Riofrio Bouquets: A bouquet producer that employs 800 individuals, with the workforce expanding to 1,400 during peak holiday seasons like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Annually, they export an impressive 290 million flower stems to the United States. Their dedication to sustainability extends from their facilities to their operations. Riofrio Bouquets actively recycles plastic, meticulously calculates water usage for each flower, returns unused flowers to farms for composting, and has ambitious plans for solar panel installations. In terms of social responsibility, they prioritize the well-being of their employees, even providing support for local dogs. Notably, they have been recognized by the municipality of Tocancipa as the top employment generator in the region. Additionally, they sponsor students both internally and externally, conduct capacity-building programs for disabled individuals, and engage in numerous other community initiatives.
Rosamina: This company, cultivating proteas and foliage on 50 hectares year-round, demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental and social sustainability. They harvest rainwater, expand their use of biocontrols, hold Rainforest Alliance certification, and are in the process of implementing solar panels to achieve energy self-sufficiency. On a social level, their employees are considered part of the Rosamina family. They are encouraged to pursue higher education, with the company providing financial support. The growth in employee numbers has even necessitated an expansion of the parking area, as many now commute by car.
The Colombian flower industry serves as a shining example of how agricultural diversity can flourish alongside sustainable practices, fostering both economic growth and social progress. As the sector continues to blossom, it showcases the transformative power of responsible and forward-thinking floral cultivation.
