Innovations in Greenhouse Design: Frameless Windows and Insect Netting Revolutionize Light and Pest Control

by Anna

Greenhouse growers have long strived to maximize natural light while warding off troublesome insects. To achieve this balance, many have turned to frameless windows for their greenhouse roofs. The challenge, however, has been integrating insect netting with these frameless windows. Contrary to common misconceptions, there are two effective methods to address this issue. For over a year, growers have had the option of affixing harmonica netting to frameless windows using an aluminum profile. Furthermore, a more established approach involves installing insect screens. SchermNed, an industry leader, offers growers access to both solutions and has developed a patented in-house insect mesh filter.

A Simple Installation Process

The ease of installation is a significant advantage offered by these solutions. Growers can apply the insect gauze from the inside without the need for complex adjustments to the ventilation system. Jack van der Voort, an expert in the field, explains, “That makes it cost-effective and completely eliminates the risk of leakage. When installing the insect mesh filter, there’s no need to attach an aluminum profile to the window, which may require alterations to the ventilation system. This streamlined approach simplifies the process.”

With winter fast approaching, this method of installation proves especially convenient. “When installing harmonica mesh, you’d typically need to open the window by about 35 centimeters. This is a task growers prefer to avoid during the winter, particularly when adverse weather conditions can further complicate outdoor installation,” adds Van der Voort.

Rising Demand for Frameless Windows

Frameless windows and their compatibility with insect netting have gained immense popularity among greenhouse growers. SchermNed’s director notes, “Roughly half of the projects we’re currently engaged in pertain to these types of windows.” This growing trend is evident in numerous upcoming projects, including a ten-hectare installation at a seed and tomato grower. The ease of installation, even during winter months, makes this solution attractive. Growers seeking insect netting before the summer of 2024 are encouraged to consider ordering now to ensure timely implementation.

Maintaining Optimal Conditions

Growers who opt for the insect mesh filter can continue their cultivation practices with confidence. According to Jack, growers have reported that they can maintain their preferred climate and settings using their expertise and climate control systems. Notably, the installation of the filter does not affect window gaps, eliminating the need for adjustments. The temperature increase, at most, reaches one degree Celsius, a change readily manageable for growers. This balance between light exposure and pest control, provided by frameless windows and insect gauze, has been well-received by the horticultural community.

A Case in Point: Wim Peters Kwekerijen

Wim Peters Kwekerijen, a tomato grower, serves as an example of the benefits of these innovations. After witnessing the success of fellow grower WPK, they installed SchermNed’s insect mesh filters in one of their four cultivation sites. This greenhouse boasts frameless windows, evident from the window latches affixed through the glass and the absence of window profiles. Pleased with the results, Wim Peters Kwekerijen plans to implement this solution in their other sites. Reduced pest issues and improved ecological balance, allowing biological agents to thrive, have been among the notable outcomes. Additionally, the solution keeps valuable bumblebees safely within the greenhouse, preserving the local ecosystem.
