In Pryluky, Ukraine, the Kebenko family proudly unveils their flourishing greenhouse, ‘Staryi Dvir,’ adorned with an impressive display of 50,000 tulips showcasing diverse varieties and hues.
Guided by Roman Kebenko for over 15 years, what began as a hobby in flower cultivation has evolved into a thriving family business. Kebenko passionately attests to the therapeutic power of flowers, emphasizing their ability to offer a respite from life’s challenges and negativity.
This year, faced with a challenge when the Netherlands couldn’t fulfill their tulip order, Kebenko seized an opportunity presented by an offer for 40 alternative tulip varieties. Among these, the standout “Neon” and a unique variety bearing 2–3 flowers per stem caught the eye. Additionally, a special tulip named “Roman Empire” was cultivated exclusively for the Staryi Dvir greenhouse by a Dutch supplier.
Introducing potted tulips that can be replanted after blooming adds a sustainable and eco-friendly dimension to the greenhouse’s offerings.
Hydroponically grown, the tulips at Staryi Dvir stand out for their impressive size, ranging from 50 to 70 cm. The Kebenko family, with guidance from Dutch suppliers, successfully transitioned to hydroponic cultivation over the past five years, enhancing the quality and resilience of their tulips.
One of the crucial distinctions highlighted by Kebenko lies in the origin of the tulips. European-imported tulips often endure a journey in an immature state with small buds to withstand transit and storage. In contrast, tulips from Pryluky’s ‘Staryi Dvir’ are delivered fresh to retailers’ refrigerators. This distinction ensures that consumers receive the freshest blooms possible, underscoring the commitment to quality that defines the greenhouse’s offerings.
